The Grand National race is as epic as the chariot race in the Ben-Hur, with forty horses thundering around a four and a half mile course littered with thirty colossal fences with names such as Becher’s Brook, The Chair, Valentine’s Brook,  and Water Jump. The race was originally run in 1839 and although the fences have been made safer over the years many horses have lost their lives attempting to get around the formidable course, just since 2000 forty-two horses have died. It is estimated the six hundred people watch this horse racing spectacle every year, 70,000 at the actual course. It is televised in over 140 countries and has been broadcasted on the radio since 1927. It is estimated in 2018 that one hundred and fifty million pounds will be bet on this single race. To win this race both the jockey and the horse must be perfectly balanced as a team, it is the hardest horse race in the world and is indeed a test of strength and endurance.
