The Best Sporting Occasions Around the World – Part 2

Our second lap of the most exciting sporting occasions around the world looks at The Super Bowl in America, The Ryder Cup, and Polo at Palermo. Three terrific sporting events with very different sports being featured, namely American football, golf and polo.

The Super Bowl

Possibly the most glamorous of modern sporting events, with pop music superstars appearing to entertain the audience between halves and to sing the national anthem is the Super Bowl. It is suggested that television advertising rates during the Super Bowl are the most expensive in the world. The Super Bowl first took place back in 1967 and it must be said to an underwhelmed audience. But today Super Bowls are held in great esteem and marks the end of a grueling sixteen match season not including playoffs. The two teams come from the AFC and the NFC as winners of both respective domestic leagues, and they compete for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is one of golf’s most prestigious events, it pits the elite of golf of America against those of Europe in a gun fight at the OK Corral. No quarter is given in a tournament that takes place every two years. Some of the most highly paid sportsmen on the planet are more than happy to devote their time for the country against the old golfing foe. The original competition was just Great Britain versus the USA in 1927, but because of continued American dominance players from Continental Europe were allowed to join the GB team. Since 1979, Europe has won ten Ryder Cups and the USA eight, and it is quite amazing that no prize money is given out to any of the players.

Polo at Palermo

In the world of Polo, Argentina is recognized as the premier destination in the world. And the Argentine Open Championship is considered the elite as far as Polo players and fans around the world are concerned. The competition was formerly called the River Plata Polo Championship and was first held in 1893, which makes it one of the oldest sporting events in the world. It was moved to Palermo in the early 1920’s and since WWII not surprisingly Argentina has been the team to beat. Polo actually was designed by English ranchers in Argentina and was similar to another game played by Argentine gauchos called Pato.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon

Tennis and Wimbledon are synonymous together as grass courts and strawberries and cream. They conjure up images of an English summer and everything that is gentile and respectable. This top tennis competition is one of four grand slam events taking place every year all over the world. However, Wimbledon is the only major tennis tournament played on grass, and the All England Club is recognized as the home of modern tennis as we know it today.

Tennis originated in France sometime around the 12th Century but became really popular in Britain in the 1800’s. There are marvelous images that are held in one’s mind of classic men’s and women’s finals being played out on Center Court Wimbledon. In our concluding part of the best sporting occasions around the world we take to the track with horse racing and throw some pitches at the World Series.
